The C grade Pennant Final for the
Bercini Cup, between Maitland & Paterson, played at Kurri on 17
March, 2013, turned into a 6 hour marathon, and fortunately for
daylight savings was able to be finalised on the day.
Paterson were the defending
champions, topped the table and had defeated the Maitland side in AN earlIer round of
the series, so were entitled to start short priced favourites.
The first group out were Tim
Hicks & Mick Thomson for Paterson up against Maitland Captain Tom
Oswald and Mark Burkhill. An opening par on the first by Mick saw
Paterson saw Paterson jump to the lead only to lose their advantage
on the next. Through holes 2 - 7 it was fairly even, until Paterson
asserted their authority to build a lead. On 8, Mick Chimed in with
a par to start the eventual rout, and was ably backed up by partner
Tim, who struck to win the next four holes and provide a 5 up lead,
after the 12th. Maitland, narrowed the lead courtesy of Tom, winning
holes 13 & 14. The 15th was halved with a bogey, meaning Maitland
would have to win the final 3 holes to move to the 19th. Paterson
were not having any of this, and a par by Tim on 16, finalised their
match in Paterson's favour 4 and 2.
Meanwhile the second game between
Paterson captain Trent McGee and evergreen Phil Watson, up against
Dave Brennan & Brad Forbes for Maitland, was well underway and
reached an early conclusion, when the Maitland pair towelled their
opponents up by the margin of 5 & 4 This squared the games up and it
would come down to the number one teams to resolve the deadlock.
The final game was between C
grade veteran Wayne Clark and Nathan Mudd against the mighty Quinn,
Ian, and his partner Matt Parish. Unlike the first two games, there
was no early shower and went the full distance plus one more, where
it was decided on the 19th.
After some controversy on the
18th green, over whether a short putt was conceded to Ian Quinn,
Matt Parish, turned hero when he sank a 5 foot putt for a 5, to take
the match to the 19th. Pressure was mounting on the players as the
large crowd of supporters followed the game up the first hole.
Matt made the green in two whilst
Wayne bettered his shot by knocking it to 8 feet, right in birdie
territory. Matt made a conventional par and the result came down to
Wayne's putt. He charged the birdie putt which stormed past the hole
leavingg a heart stopping 6 foot return putt. Sadly and much to the
delight of the Maitland players & supporters, the attempt failed and
the Cup went to Maitland.
Recapping to the early part of
the match, Paterson had the early running and had skipped to a 2 up
lead after 9 holes. Maitland clawed this lead back through Matt, on
10 & 11, with a birdie and a par. The game flowed back & forth on 12
& 13, until Ian sank a long putt on 14 to put Maitland 1 up.
Wayne responded for Paterson by chipping in from rear of the green,
on 15 to even it up. The remaining holes were halved taking the
match to sudden death.

PATERSON TOO STRONG
FOR STONEBRIDGE

The Paterson C grade regained The
Bercini Cup after a 3 year hiatus, by defeating the depleted
Stonebridge team two matches to one. Unfortunately for Stonebridge,
they were unable to field a full team due to prior commitments.
The first match out featured the
number three, where veteran Phil Watson teamed with Trent McGee to
defeat Rex Talbot 8/7, in what could only be called a one sided
contest.
Lindsay Forbes and Dean Joliffe
upset Paul Monaghan & Steve Wallington, 2/1, to level the matches
one all, leaving it to the number ones to decide the winner.
Captain Wayne Clark teamed with
Brett Hawke to comfortably account for Steve Hughes and Paul Dunn,
to the tune of 4/3 to break the deadlock.
Once again the Patto Tavern will
be rocking of a Sunday evening.

2011 C GRADE FINAL
BERCINI CUP

The Branxton C grade side almost
caused another upset when they stretched the previously undefeated
Maitland side to the limit in the final of the C grade pennants,
played at Muswellbrook. The course was in mint condition for the
final and proved a real test for the C graders and the Maitland side
were thankful, when Tony Gannon calmly rolled in a 5 foot putt on
the 18th green to clinch the Bercini Cup.
In the first match out Phil
Oswald & Phil Ryder (Maitland) were up against stalwart Lennie
Porter & his youthful partner Ben Phillips (Branxton). The fact that
the Maitland players had to spot the Branxton boys 13 shots meant it
was going to be a close and interesting match. Throughout the early
stages the match see sawed and it wasn't till the middle of the back
nine Maitland asserted itself and led by 3 after 15 holes. Branxton
lifted to win the last three holes and take the match to sudden
death. Ben Phillips made a miraculous par on the 18th after playing
his second shot from the right hand side of the 10th fairway,
towards the green, then knocked a wedge over the trees onto the
green and two putted for a par for the win.
Whilst this was going on the
second match between Reg Crick & Gary McPhee (Maitland) against Neil
Bird and big hitting Richard Crooks (Branxton) came to an early
conclusion when they won comfortably 4 & 2. The handicaps for this
match were identical both sides having an 18 & 19 marker, so it
basically became a scratch match. Once again the match was close
until the back nine when Maitland slipped to a 2 hole lead after the
eleventh, increased it at the 15th to 3 up, and extended it further
to four up when Gary parred the 16th hole to wrap it up.
All the focus then turned to the
final match between Maitland captain Kevin Patterson & his super
cool partner Tony Gannon the Branxton captain and C grade stalwart,
Mick Armstrong and Jamie Fairfull. After 7 holes Kev & Tony were 5
up mainly due to impeccable golf by Tony, only being 3 over par. At
this stage it appeared an early shower would be the result. However
the Branxton players lifted and kept picking up holes, one by one
over the back nine to the point where it was all even after 17
holes. On the 18th hole Tony Gannon had reached the green for 4 and
needing to hole a 5 foot putt for the match win and the Bercini Cup,
which is an enormous pressure for any golfer let alone a C grader.
The Branxton opponents had made a 6 and the putt had to go in or it
was sudden death up the first. Tony had the final putt and calmy
stroked it into the hole for the win.
Whilst this was happening the
first out match had halved the first sudden hole and were moving to
the second tee. As the match had been decided 2 - 0 to Maitland, the
players were called in and the initial result of a halved match was
recorded.
