WILKS REIGNS IN THE DESERT

Muswellbrook’s Sue Wilks has taken out the 2023 HRDGA Sandgreens Championships _ her second major district title for the year. After winning the District Foursomes with Singleton’s Jodie Dunn in August, Wilks was able to hold off Scone duo Julie Leckie and Lyn Banks to win by one shot with a final score of 86. In the nett event, Jane Hegarty’s 71 was just enough to defeat her Merriwa club mate Gay Stanton, who posted a 73. Sue Wilks and Jodie Dunn have taken out the Open and Closed Hunter River District Foursomes Championship by one shot. Played on Tuesday at Cypress Lakes Golf club, despite a shaky few holes on the back nine, the pair were able to hold off Moree’s Teresa Munro and Vicki Gall to finish with a score of 90. JANE HOLME AND HOSED AT HUNTER RIVER DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Vintage’s Jane Holmes has streeted the field to take out both the Open and Closed Hunter River District Championships at the Hunter Valley Golf Club. The Open event is for all competitors while the Closed Championship is for Hunter River District Members only. Firing off an impressive 82 despite several difficult pin positions, Holmes defeated last year’s winner Lyn Banks and Singleton’s Jodie Dunn by two shots. Played at Nelson Bay Golf Club – Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd July 2023 Another very enjoyable weekend. The four ball matches on Saturday were very close with Newcastle taking a 4 / 2 score line into the Sunday individual matches. The senior’s division saw matches finish 3 all. In the juniors Newcastle came out on top 4 matches to 2 Overall score Newcastle 11 matches Hunter River 7 matches. Weekend highlight was a hole in one for Hunter Junior Lachlan Standing. MENS HRDGA AMBROSE CHAMPS DECIDED ON 4 WAY COUNTBACK

4 MAN AMBROSE Sunday, 16th July, 2023   148 players teed it up on a typical winter’s day at Kurri Golf Course. Scoring was exceptional with 4 teams equal on 58 (13 under par). A multiple countback was needed to separate the 4 teams with the Muswellbrook team of Brady Benkovic, Bobba Dial, David Schmierer and Paul Hungerford being successful. CCWGA TOO STRONG FOR HUNTER WOMEN

After losing the inter district battle last year, Central Coast Women’s Golf Association were determined to wrest the title back in 2023. Fielding two national representatives, former golf professional Louise Mullard and Shelley Beach’s Kim Burke, the team was just too strong for the Hunter women. Played at Everglades in Woy Woy, Mullard and Burke had solid wins over Singleton’s Jodie Dunn and Liz White from the Vintage at the top of the field. Branxton’s Leanne Daniels has made history winnng the Hunter River’s inaugural 9 Hole Ladies District Championship. Played at Singleton Golf Club, the stableford event was for beginners and it was Daniels, with a daily handicap of 41, who was the steadiest scoring 18 points. Despite a wobbly one pointer on the third hole, Daniels came home strongly, with three pointers on the final two holes to take victory over The Vintage’s Tracey Henderson, who finished with 16 points. “It was a great event, and I am so happy with the win,” Daniels said. ABERDEEN DUO SHINE IN HRDGA COUNTRY CUP VICTORY

The Hunter River District (HRDGA) has won the Country Cup for the third time, defeating the Newcastle Hunter District Ladies Golf Association (NHDLGA) by a convincing 46 points. Played at Scone Golf Club, The Country Cup is a Stableford 4BBB competition between 15 representative pairs from the HRDGA and the NHDLGA. This was the fourth playing of the event with HRDGA having won previously at Kurri and then Muswellbrook before NHDLGA won last year at Muree. HUNTER VALLEY CLAIM ROSELLA SHIELD

The Hunter Valley Golf Club have won their second Rosella Shield following a 4.5/1.5 win over home side Muswellbrook. The team had it all to lose, knowing if they could not secure a victory, Scone or defending champs, The Vintage could sneak through for the win. “It was a great win against the home side, ” team captain Melita Watson said. “It was either win or nothing for us and I am just thrilled.” The Vintage finished in second place just .5 of a game ahead of Scone.

MELITA WATSON AWARDED LIFE MEMBERSHIP

One of the Hunter River’s most dedicated and devoted workers, Melita Watson, has been awarded with Life Membership of the District. Melita’s efforts have been tireless and was the driving force behind the lady members of Hunter River District Clubs changing affiliation from Newcastle Hunter Ladies DGA to the Hunter River DGA in 2014. It was a very difficult and challenging transition, but it has proven to be a success with Hunter Ladies now playing a pennant series, district championships and representative matches in the Hunter area. “I am very appreciative and excited, it is a lovely gesture,” she said.

Singleton Golf Club is celebrating its 100 year Anniversary on the 20th October 2022. Congratulations to Singleton on achieving this magnificent milestone which will be celebrated over the following 12 months.

The Order of Merit (OOM) will be running again in 2022 commencing with the Denman Open on Sunday 24th April. Ensure you have a chance of winning this years OOM by playing in as many Open Days and District Events you can.
