There’s a famous English proverb that says if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again and it’s a line that comfortably sums up Sally Perram’s home course victory in today’s 9 hole District Championships at Singleton.
Playing in the event for the third year in a row, Perram was thrilled to finally win the title, even if her start was a little bit rocky.
“After three holes I had one point,” she laughed
“And then I just had four three pointers, a two pointer and then a three pointer to finish on 18 points, I can’t believe that.”
The 9 hole District championship is for beginner ladies and features a pre-tournament clinic with Golf NSW’s Regional Manager Tanya Smith _ a tuition session that was a hit with the women.
“I thought Tanya was brilliant,” Sally said.
“She just communicated really well and the session was really appropriate for beginners.”
It was a sentiment echoed by the Championship runner up, Leonie Scorse from the Vintage.
“Tanya taught us a lot about aim today and aim seems to be a big problem of mine, so I think that definitely helped me today,” she said.
Scorse was playing in her second 9 hole championships and believes the event has greatly improved her confidence on the course.
“It’s great for us long handicappers because often when we’re playing in comp we’re playing with low handicappers and we get a bit intimidated,” she said.
“But playing with the women today, you’re more relaxed because you know when you hit a bad shot everybody’s hitting a bad shot at some point.”
Scorse lost the title on a countback but admitted no one was going to beat Perram’s final six hole blitzkrieg of 17 points.
“Never mind, I’m happy to have had 18 points really, that’s really encouraging for me,” she said.
Today’s victory has clearly unleased the beast in Perram.
“I took up the game a few years ago, it is everything now, I can’t get enough of it.”
Eleven ladies from the HRDGA played in the event, which also featured on course mentoring and guidance.
“I think for beginners and the ones that are just needing that little bit of encouragement I think this event is fabulous,” Perram said.
“Beginner ladies should really give it a try, it’s great.”
