Kurri Golf Club has cleaned up at the District Sandgreens Championships with members Josh Stig and Renee Bean Wyper claiming the the Men’s and Women’s trophies at Murrurundi on Sunday.
For Stig it was sweet revenge after losing last year’s event on a countback.
“This is my first win in the Sandgreens,” he said, adding:” despite hitting off the wrong tee on one hole but probably making birdie on five, that was a good hole,” he laughed.
Stig finished the day with a 4 over 72 and pipped last year’s winner Max Wallington from Cypress Lakes by 1. In the women’s, Renee Bean Wyper, playing for the first time on sandgreens, shot 17 over 87.
“It certainly is a sight it was very hard, I am so thankful to my partners because they actually raked for me because I had no idea how to do it,” she laughed.
Bean Wyper admitted to being a little baffled by the subtelty of sandgreens art.
“My very first par was memorable, I think it took 11 or 12 holes to get one it was quite painful I ended up having two pars all day. You are not allowed to hit the greens, I think I just need to practice with a 3 wood and just bump and run all day. It’s different golf that’s for sure.”
It the nett event, Muswellbrook’s Vonnie Palmer won the day but admitted she has had plenty of experience on sandgreens.
“I’ve been dragged up here a few times so I guess I know my way around,” she said.
“But is’s very suprising to take it out – Murrurundi course was fantastic and the Murrurundi gang up here have done a great job with hosting.”
And in a cheer for the locals, young member 16 year old Connor Hyde, took out the Men’s nett with an amazing 47 points.
“I came up here and practised and stayed positive and things happened,” he said.
“I have been playing for one year and 2 months and my handicap is 23.”
Pretty sure your handicap won’t be 23 after such a blistering round Connor. Congratulations to all the winners.
