It was a clean sweep for Kurri Golf Club at the second staging of the Hunter River District 9 Hole Championships at Singleton today.
Debra Nugent won the title with 22 points off a 46 handicap just beating team mate Janelle Endacott who scored 20 points off a 43 handicap.
“I didn’t lose a ball today and I didn’t go in any of the water or sand so I think that was the secret,” Debra said.
Although she has been playing for just on two years, Debra has already developed the classic golfer’s lament.
“I shouldn’t say it because I won, but I got a wipe on the last hole too, I wasn’t happy about that.”
The 9 hole District Championships was created by the HRDGA Ladies Sub Committee in 2023 and is designed to introduce beginner women to competitive golf.
12 women attended the day which included a one hour clinic conducted by GolfNSW.
“The girls were great, really good camaraderie and hopefully they got something out of it,” said GolfNSW Senior Regional Manager, Mark Ingrey.
“Today is all about development, we have a big hole in our development pathways, you can’t go from a clinic to 18 hole golf so 9 holes like today is sensational.”
And the winner couldn’t agree more.
“It was very good and very helpful,” Debra said.
“We learnt to watch the slopes of the green which was interesting. The women all liked it and said it helped them, it was very worthwhile.”
Now a self-confessed golf addict, playing twice a week, the 2024 Champion has some sage words for all golfers.
“I am a person who wants to come first and win but this is the only sport that I have ever done that you cannot be like that or it will muck you up,” she said
“You just have to play and have a good time and whatever happens, happens.”
She may be a beginner but already Deb is sounding like a seasoned veteran.
