MELITA WATSON AWARDED LIFE MEMBERSHIP

One of the Hunter River’s most dedicated and devoted workers, Melita Watson, has been awarded with Life Membership of the District.

Melita’s efforts have been tireless and was the driving force behind the lady members of Hunter River District Clubs changing affiliation from Newcastle Hunter Ladies DGA to the Hunter River DGA in 2014.

It was a very difficult and challenging transition, but it has proven to be a success with Hunter Ladies now playing a pennant series, district championships and representative matches in the Hunter area.

“I am very appreciative and excited, it is a lovely gesture,” she said.

“Everything I did was for the game of golf. I am so thrilled with the district and how it is going, for me that is the satisfaction I get, however it is nice to be recognised.”

Melita was the first Hunter River District Ladies Captain, from 2014 till 2021 but also has a remarkable playing record.

  • Multiple winner of the Hunter River Ladies Championship – 8 times, first in 1967 thru to 2008.
  • Hunter River Mixed Foursomes champion with husband Michael.
  • Hunter River Mixed Ambrose with Michael and in another team that included son Brent.
  • Branxton Club Champion 15 times from 1966 to 2006.

Melita is delighted that the Kurri Kurri Ladies have decided to join the Hunter River District and field a team in the 2023 HRDGA Rosella Shield Pennants competition.

“It’s wonderful news for the district and will strengthen the Pennants competition even further. This is what makes the effort worthwhile.”
