Vintage duo Mel Reid and Jen Jones have taken out both the Open and Closed District Foursomes Championship played at Cypress Lakes today.
For Reid it is her second foursomes title to go with her maiden victory in 2024 while Jones was delighted to finally get her hands on a major trophy.
“Its great to win this,” she said.
“I think we had such a roller coaster day yesterday (playing together in the singles championships) that we actually learnt a lot about each other’s game and I think we both came this morning with a better focus and a better purpose and yeah, we just delivered.”
Reid added that the secret ingredient in foursomes, “fun” was key to their success.
“Sometimes it takes the pressure off a little bit when you’re just having a good time with your partner and your playing partners.”
The pair shot 16 over 88 to defeat hot favourites, Dom Kelly (Merewether) and Katrina Skinner Oyston (Maitland) and fellow visitors Helen Haynes (Hawks Nest) and Virginia Younger (Cromer) by one shot.
Next best on 90 was the locals, Helen Vandenbruggen and Deb Scriven, who had such a day out they ended up taking out the best nett score of the day, 70.5. They won both the Open and Closed Nett Championship and were the only team, out of 44, to shoot lower than their combined handicap.
“It was a great day, I just did as Helen told me,” Deb quipped. “If she said chip it I did and if she said putt it, I did!”
“We felt like we were just cruising along out there today,” Helen added. “We got along well together I think and it was handy having a bit of local knowledge.”
In Division Two the scratch winners in both the Open and Closed was also another duo from the Vintage Golf Club, Helen Topp and Tracey Henderson. Their solid 96 off the stick was also enough to see them secure the best nett score of 74.
