The Hunter River District (HRDGA) has won the Country Cup for the third time, defeating the Newcastle Hunter District Ladies Golf Association (NHDLGA) by a convincing 46 points.
Played at Scone Golf Club, The Country Cup is a Stableford 4BBB competition between 15 representative pairs from the HRDGA and the NHDLGA.
This was the fourth playing of the event with HRDGA having won previously at Kurri and then Muswellbrook before NHDLGA won last year at Muree. The result for 2023 was an impressive victory by the host Hunter River District, 599 points to 553 points.
Leading the HRDGA charge was Aberdeen’s Karen Newton and Judy Miller who combined well for 45 points, just pipping Cypress Lakes’ Hely Vandenbruggen and Dungog’s Colleen Atkins with 44.
Merriwa’s ever consistent Tania Carrigan and Sue Weis helped the HRDGA scoreboard with 43 points, while Kathy Dray and Marion Newton of Muree with 42 points, finished the best of NHDLGA team. The pairing of Yvonne Palmer, Muswellbrook, and Leah Jamieson, Aberdeen, rounding out the prizes also with 42 points.
Colleen French, Shortland Waters, hit the best shot on the par 3 8th hole, and Jo Brown, Waratah, the best on the 13th hole to take the NTP prizes home.
The day could not have been such a success without the support of the Scone Golf Club and associated volunteers in conducting the event. The course was well prepared by the greens staff and a band of volunteer workers. Congratulations also to coordinators, the NHDLGA’s Dom Kelly and HRDGA’s Lyn Banks.
Next year the Country Cup will be hosted by NHDLGA at a date and venue to be decided.
