Congratulations to the sixteen representatives of the Hunter River District Golf Association who played in the annual Matchplay event against the Central Coast Womens Golf Association. On Wednesday June 22, the team played non-handicap matchplay at The Vintage. In a very close contest the HRDGA team managed to win 9/7, and this is the first time Hunter River has won the event since its inception seven years ago.
Seven players in the team were from The Vintage, which was a big asset with only one player being defeated in their match. The Vintage players were Jasmine Vesper (The Vintage / Singleton), Liz White, Jane Holmes, Kristine McMahon, Jen Jones, Katrina Kendall and Maree Gledhill. Others in the team were Scone players Lyn Banks, Julie Leckie and Dordie Bragg, Muswellbrook players Kim Robinson, Sue Wilks and Lindis Durham, Hunter Valley’s Melita Watson and Cypress Lakes players Julz Vandenberg and Hely Vandenbruggen. Thanks also to reserves Anne Brightling from The Vintage, and Liz Latham from Cypress Lakes who were on standby.
It was a lovely day for golf and the course was in great condition given the recent wet weather in the lower hunter. It was great to see many pairs follow the field once their matches were completed, and players and Vintage members watch the conclusion of the last matches that did go to the 18th, providing quite a spectacle for all.
It was pleasing to see past Captain Melita Watson take her place in the team and be a part of the winning team in the event that she helped to initiate; no doubt she was happy that at last HRDGA had a win!
Appreciation is extended to The Vintage management, course superintendents and food and beverage team. The event was supported by the HRDGA and sponsor The Bedshed.
The winning team was presented with a souvenir HRDGA monogrammed coffee mug and the runners up with a HRDGA monogrammed golf ball.
