Christmas is looking bright for Sue Wilks after the Muswellbrook representative claimed her consecutive Melita Watson Order of Merit title.
“It is an honour to win this twice, I am just humble because Melita Watson is just so passionate about it,” she said.
“It has been a great year and I had Kerrie Fry chasing me until she unfortunately became injured.”
Branxton’s Fry was hot on Wilks’ tail and at one stage was only 160 points behind the defending champion.
But after Fry suffered a shoulder injury she was unable to compete in the remaining events.
The Melita Watson Order of Merit is awarded to the Hunter River District woman who achieves the most points from competing in the District Championship and the many club Open Days.
The points are awarded on a sliding scale with the District Champion receving 500 points while Open Day winners collect 200 points. The Order of Merit is divided into three grades and points are awarded down to 15th place in each division.
It is named after Melita Watson who has been a leader in the Hunter River for many years and has several District Titles to her name. Melita has been a tireless worker for the HRDGA and served as it’s inaugural captain when the women left the Newcastle Hunter River District Association to join the men in the Hunter River District Association in 2013.
