The Vintage’s Liz White has made it two from two at the Hunter River District Championships, this time combining with Mel Reid to take out the Ladies Foursomes title.
The duo had a day to remember, claiming both the Open and Closed Championship as well as the Overall Nett and Closed Nett Championships. The Closed Championship is reserved for HRDGA members only.
On their home course, White and Reid, who had never played together before, shot a 14 over 85 to win by four shots over their playing partners, Kurri’s Sue Ford and Renee Bean Wyper.
Reid, who took up the sticks just under two years ago, was thrilled with her victory.
“I was terrified today because of the pressure I put on myself, but I am so glad that I was asked to play and encouraged to play.” she said. “Right now I am just really excited to play some of the more Hunter River tournaments and see where the journey takes me.”
The former national touch football representative and sister to former Socceroo, Paul Reid, admitted she is very hard on herself when playing competitively.
“I have been known to spiral a little bit but having a really level headed player that I was playing with actullay really did help just stay on task.”
But her partner, Liz White was full of praise for Reid.
“I think Mel is underplaying how well she did today. She was very calm considering it was her first ever event like this,” she said. “She played some amazing shots and will definitely be one of the Hunter’s next champions, and unlike some of us, has youth on her side.”
For White it has been a great two days, taking out the Individual Championship yesterday at Cypress Lakes and today winning the Gross and Nett Championship shooting a solid 71 with Reid.
“It’s really nice to win these things, but golf has a great way of making you come back down to earth pretty quickly,” she laughed.
“I’ll take the win and remember it next time I have 20 points in a Stableford round!”
In Division Two it was a battle between the locals, with Cathy Gadd and Dearne Cameron just pipping Julia Smith and Tracey Henderson by two shots, 103 to 105.
